Member/Other Attendance: Leigh Holzer, Wally Wahl, and Tammy Wendt.
Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by President Jeff Jalbert.
Minutes: Lori Van Beek was unable to attend the meeting, but emailed draft minutes from the January meeting for the board’s consideration.
No changes were made to the minutes and they were approved as submitted.
Treasurer’s Report: Mark Van Beek presented the Treasurer’s Report as of January 31, 2009. He noted that the Certificate of Deposit
has a current value of $5,663.78. Matt requested reimbursement for the display board that was made for the basket fundraiser
for the NAVHDA convention. As was discussed previously, Jeff Jalbert attended the NAVHDA convention as the chapter representative,
and is eligible to be reimbursed up to $500 for travel expenses. Wally Wahl mentioned that he would appreciate reimbursement
for the annual basket puppy’s NAVHDA registration fee. MOTION: Jeff Jalbert moved and it was seconded to approve the
Treasurer’s report, which motion passed by unanimous vote.
Business:
Sportsman Show:
It was discussed that Steve Buck has access to tables and skirts for the show. Per Mark, raffle tickets can be printed with no problem.
We discussed using the brochures we currently have made to distribute at the event. Mark and Dan will work on getting the
brochures printed. The board discussed signing up to volunteer for the Sportsman’s Show and requesting members sign up for times
when they are able to help out at the show.
Dan got a kit from NAVAHDA with a banner, brochures, etc. that can be used at the show. The club has a wooden banner that can
also be used. ACTION TAKEN: Leigh Holzer agreed to put together the photo frame for the show. Members are to get pictures to
Leigh Holzer so he can work on this project.
Testing Dates and Judges:
Test dates have been secured. Tory Zimmerman is still working on finalizing the judges. Jeff asked Jo Riah and Frank Spaeth for
judges. Our goal is to get concrete commitments from these people in a timely manner. Wally Wahl will let us know at a later time
if he can judge the fall test.
Handlers Clinic:
The clinic dates are set for July 25 and July 26. Registration is $75.00 per person. The club’s cost is approx. $400.00 for clinic leaders.
Jeff Jalbert announced that he had spoken with Tracy Nelson who has been approved by the Nationals for her to run the clinic.
Wally Wahl recommended Blain Carter be considered. Matt approved the poster and application for the event. The information
needs to be sent out to members.
Test Banquet:
It was noted that the location for the test banquet will be at the West Fargo Speedway. Leigh offered to be in charge of getting this
together. He will call to see if the back room is available to reserve for the banquet. Banquet time will be 7:00 pm. The raffle tickets
indicate that the drawing for the shot gun will be at this banquet.
Meetings:
Members discussed keeping the meeting times at 7 pm. It was also mentioned that we may want to have a potluck at times for the
meetings just to change it up a little bit. Members were in favor, but mentioned that it would be easier to do when it warms up outside.
Next meeting is going to be held on Monday, March 2, 2009, as there is a conflict with Gander Mountain with a Hunters
Safety course they are hosting. They requested us to move our meeting just this month.
Mission Statement:
It was suggested that at future meetings the members discuss goals we would like for our organization, including a mission statement
and short and long term goals.
Dog Days Event:
Mark emailed several North Dakota Retriever Club board members and they responded with interest in joining NAVHDA in a community-
wide Dog Days Event. Details for the event, including location, speakers, etc. will need to be worked out. Mark mentioned
that any profits will need to be split between the organizations involved.
Chapter Needs:
We are going to try and put together a library of training materials. Board members discussed how many launchers the club owns. It
was noted that the club owns two launchers in good condition and that they could be rented out to earn money for our organization.
Wally suggested purchasing a digital photo frame for use by the club, with a cost not to exceed $100. ACTION TAKEN: Matt will
check into the photo frames and report back at the next meeting. Mark suggested that he check with his son at Office Max for a sale.
It was decided that portable training tables aren’t necessary at this time as other members have tables that have been used in the past
and we could continuing doing this.
Pictures for Updated Club Brochure:
The deadline for submitting pictures for a new club brochure was extended. Pictures to be submitted for consideration should show
training, puppies, kid pictures, members training. Pictures can be brought to the March meeting. Members indicated that the club
should get pictures taken at the events we host. John Fugleberg may be interested in taking pictures. Mark agreed to check with
John to see if he would be interested. He was also going to see what pictures John may have taken at the last spring test. Tammy
Wendt also offered to take pictures at club events.
NAVHDA Convention Review:
Jeff and Tammy attended the NAVHDA annual meeting and reported back. The club’s annual basket “Wally Wahl trained puppy”
was not sold on the auction, but a buyer did pay $1,000. Laura Picard is the new Newsletter Editor and articles should be sent to her
for publishing
During 2008, NAVHDA stayed within budget. There was a 1.5 percent increase in members.
National NAVHDA Memberships:

2. January 1, 2010, renewal memberships will go from $45 to $50.
3. Life memberships will remain the same at $1,000.
Paul Lester resigned as a NAVDHA judge.
Chapter test packets are changing as they are trying to make them more user-friendly. This will start for the spring test.
Chapter Motions discussed included the development of a VC breeder’s award. Qualifications were discussed at length. They will
possibly stick to the same criteria. The E.C. will determine criteria whether it’s going to be 2 or 3 dogs.
The benefits of chapter surveys were discussed as the survey results can suggest improvements.
Ideas for events to better our chapter:
The following ideas were discussed:
1. Trap shoots
2. 2. Dog days
3. Fun Shoots
4. Demonstrations of dogs, example show how they retrieve and discuss technique and accomplishing this goal.
5. Pheasant shoots-discuss double elimination do we want to have this as an option.
6. 50/50 raffles
7. Buy some launchers and then rent them out to raise money for the chapter.
Wally Wahl was presented money to help offset his medical costs from what was collected at the NAVDHA convention.

2. Send a thank-you note to the buyer of our puppy from the NAVDHA convention.

Minutes - February 2009
Board Attendance: Matt Olson, Steve Buck, Mark
Van Beek, Lori Van Beek, Keith Kemmer, Dan
Pforr, Jeff Jalbert.
Board Absence: Tory Zimmerman.
Member Attendance: None
Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by
Vice-President Steve Buck.
Treasurer’s Report: Mark Van Beek noted that
there were no expenditures made in November.
Approval of Minutes: Lori stated that she
emailed the November meeting minutes out in
advance to the board. She brought a paper copy for
review as well. There were no corrections to the
minutes.
MOTION: Approval of the minutes was
moved and seconded, which motion passed by
unanimous vote.
Business:
Election Ballots: Ballots were opened and tallied
by the board. The following board members were
re-elected for the two-year term 2009-2010: Jeff
Jalbert, Steve Buck, Matt Olson and Lori Van Beek.
Discussion followed on board positions.
MOTION:
A motion was made by Steve Buck, seconded by
Keith Kemmer, for the following board positions
and appointments, which motion passed by
unanimous vote.
President Jeff Jalbert
Vice President – Steve Buck
Secretary – Lori Van Beek
Treasurer – Mark Van Beek
Director of Training – Keith Kemmer
Director of Judging – Tory Zimmerman
Director of Promotions – Dan Pforr
Director of Testing – Matt Olson
Appointed positions: Leigh Holzer, Newsletter
Editor; Steve Buck, Test Secretary; Keith Kemmer,
Bird Buyer. The Board would like to get the
minutes out every month to the membership.
Possibly Leigh could get in touch with Fausto
Chepil on putting the newsletter and minutes on the
web page.
Testing: Tory emailed the group and recommended
that we do a two-day NA test in the spring and a
three-day combination NA/UT/UPT in the fall.
Steve called Wally Wahl to see if he would be able
to be the senior judge on Friday for the Fall Test,
and he agreed to do so.
MOTION: Jeff Jalbert moved, seconded by Keith
Kemmer, to revise the test dates to June 12-13 for
NA Test and August 21-23 for Fall NA/UT/UPT
Test, which motion passed by unanimous vote.
ACTION TAKEN: Lori will email Tory to arrange
the test dates with NAVHDA. The judges should
also be secured as soon as possible.
There was a suggestion that the dinners after the test
be pot luck similar to St. Croix.
Lori indicated that volunteers came to help at the
test but were not given specific duties and left early.
This is unfortunate and we need to get new
members more involved. It was suggested that
volunteers for the tests be recruited from the
summer training. Specific duties should be
assigned to a name in advance.
Sportsman’s Show at the Dome & Raffle: Raffle
prizes were discussed. The Board agreed that one
gun for the raffle (or equivalent gift certificate) plus
a $100 and $50 gift certificate to Gander Mtn. were
sufficient prizes. The gun should be available at the
Sportsman’s Show. Also discussed were making up
t-shirts for sale (orange with black logo), printing
up more club hats, and having the club brochure
professionally printed.
MOTION: Steve Buck moved, seconded by Matt
Olson, to nominate the Director of Promotions, Dan
Pforr, to work with Dan Phillips from Gander Mtn.
to select the shot gun for the raffle at a price not to
Red River Valley NAVHDA February 2009 Page 3
exceed $1,000, which motion passed by unanimous
vote.
Lori indicated that if the prizes were firmed up at
the January meeting, there would be sufficient time
for requesting the raffle permit and printing of the
raffle tickets. In addition, the drawing deadline
should be the spring test rather than the annual
meeting, as complaints were received last year on
the length. The members must be given an absolute
deadline for turning in ticket stubs and money, so
we don’t have them turned in too late. They should
be called at least one month in advance to remind
them of deadline. If all 60 members sold one book
of 8 tickets, we should be able to cover the prize
values and make a profit.
ACTION TAKEN: Dan
Pforr will contact NAVHDA headquarters
regarding banners and brochures for the show. It
was suggested that an agenda be created with the
workers for the Sportsman’s Show.
Annual Meeting Representative: Jeff Jalbert
indicated that he will be attending the Annual
Meeting and would like to represent the club. The
club voted in past year’s to reimburse travel costs
up to $500 for the club representative. Next month
we should discuss what we’d like to put in the
Basket for the annual meeting fundraiser. Last year
the club won the high price for their basket, and was
therefore granted half the value as a fundraiser. Jeff
will check into whether the sponsoring club would
be willing to give back half the value to all
participating clubs. If the club hadn’t won the high
price, the basket would have been a loss for the
club. (NOTE: A letter from NAVHDA was
received shortly after the meeting confirming that
half the basket value would be given to all
participating clubs.)
Events – Handler’s Clinic and Banquet: The
board indicated that it is time for a Handler’s Clinic,
as it has been two years. The Steve Grossman
training was also very successful. MOTION: Steve
Buck moved, seconded by Lori Van Beek, to
schedule a Handler’s Clinic for July 25-26, 2008,
which motion passed by unanimous vote. The price
could be $75 with 20 participants.
The concept of an annual banquet fundraiser was
again raised. The event could be advertised in
advance.
ACTION TAKEN: Jeff Jalbert
volunteered to contact Russ Johnson, auctioneer.
He also indicated that he has wildlife prints that he
could donate for auction. The event could include
an Annie Oakley tournament. The potential dates
of March or April were discussed; specifically
before hunting season. A request could be made for
a Tri-tronics gift. The new Glyndon Rod & Gun
Club was suggested for a location.
Another event option was a Dog’s Deal event cosponsored
by NAVHDA, and the ND Retriever
Club, with a dog water jumping contest.
Steve Buck indicated he wrote an article for
“Versatile Hunting Dog” magazine about the hunt
the club provided for the basket fundraiser.
Future Business:
seconded by Keith Kemmer, to adjourn the meeting,
which motion passed by unanimous vote.

News Letter -TESTING YOUR DOG
NAVHDA chapters sponsor three kinds of tests:
ı The Natural Ability Test which is designed to
evaluate the inherent natural abilities of young dogs
and gain insight into their possible usefulness as
versatile gun dogs. It rates seven important inherited
abilities: nose, search, tracking, pointing, water,
desire and cooperation.
ı The Utility Preparatory Test measures the dogs’
development midway through their training toward
the Utility Test.
ı The Utility Test evaluates trained dogs in water and
field, before and after the shot, as finished versatile
hunting companions as well as many other specific
tasks.
To be truly meaningful, tests for versatile hunting dogs must
meet certain criteria. They must be conducted in an
environment which reflects actual hunting conditions and
situations. They must test the important qualities of a good
versatile dog. Judges must be knowledgeable, consistent and
objective. All testing and evaluation is to be within the context
of judging dogs as useful, productive hunting companions.
NAVHDA tests have been designed with these requirements
in mind. In addition, our record keeping provides an accurate,
complete performance evaluation on each dog tested The
results of these tests for specific breeds are available through
our Test Information Service.
In order to eliminate direct competition between dogs, entrants
in a NAVHDA test are judged one at a time, by three judges,
with their performance scored against a standard. The only
exception to this is the Invitational Test, in which dogs are
braced in the field so each dog can demonstrate his
willingness to back and work effectively with another dog.
Prizes are awarded on the basis of numerical scores achieved
in the test. Each dog that meets or exceeds minimum standards
in all areas of work is placed in one of three categories: Prize
I, II or III. Prize I being the highest classification. If all dogs
entered in a NAVHDA test perform well, all can receive a
prize.
ı The Natural Ability Test which is designed to
evaluate the inherent natural abilities of young dogs
and gain insight into their possible usefulness as
versatile gun dogs.

Winter Foot Care Tips for Pets
By Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM,

Winter boots are essential wear for humans to provide
traction and protection on snow and ice. Our pets need
special care and attention for their feet during harsh
weather, too. Learn how to minimize injury and
discomfort for your pet's paws and be aware of other
winter dangers.
Snow and Ice Balls
If your pet is going on a walk or hike with you where
there is lots of snow, ice balls can form between the paw
pads. This is the number one complaint of my dogs of
my life who have had lots of hair between the paw pads
that serves to collect the snow and form a nice hard ice
ball. Difficult to walk on! This can be helped by
trimming the hair a bit and even applying a small
amount of petroleum jelly or olive oil to the area prior to
the walk. Be sure to use an edible ointment/oil, as dogs
often lick their feet and ingest what was applied.
Another effective option are boots for pets. This may not
work for all pet personalities, but for dogs that will
tolerate a boot, this offers the ultimate protection
Salt and Deicers for Roads and Sidewalks
Salt and other ice melting granules or chemicals can
irritate your pet's paws. Pets often lick their paws when
wet or irritated, leading to possible toxicity by ingestion
of the ice melting substance. My pets also love eating
and licking the snow that falls off of boots, and if you
use (or have walked on) a deicer compound, your pet
will ingest that as well. Sand, gravel and non-clumping
cat litters are the safest option (in terms of not being
toxic) for traction on ice and snow. Use caution when
using any salt or chemical deicers and if at all possible,
buy "pet safe" brands. Be sure to rinse and dry your pet's
feet after being outside in snow and icy conditions.
Cut Paw Pads
Injuries happen from stepping on items obscured by
snow, sharp edges on ice, and sometimes from snow
toys and implements used to remove snow. First aid
treatment is to gently cleanse the wound with warm
water and a mild soap, and apply pressure to stop
bleeding. Paw pads are very thick and slow to heal; deep
cuts to the paw pads usually require sutures for proper
healing.
